WHO ARE EMACE?

A Sri Lankan NGO (non-government organisation) whose mission is as follows: to protect the basic human rights of Sri Lanka’s most vulnerable people, by helping women, children and displaced people attain adequate means of income generation, health care, education, security and environmental sustainability, while actively influencing industries and government policies toward more sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. 

It was established in the 1970s by a group of interested community members/volunteers. It delivers programmes in the following areas:

  • Women’s property and inheritance rights / Legal Service / Violence against women
  • Income generating assistance in conflict affected communities in the north east
  • Skills Development Training Institute for Unskilled and Internally Displaced Youths
  • Women’s Economic Advancement for Low Income Families
  • Environmental Management System for Small and Medium Businesses
  • Low Tech Alternative Energy Promotion: Solar Cooking
  • Environmental Awareness Program for Bolgoda Lake: Biodiversity Conservation Program
  • Ecolabelling
  • Recovery of rural livelihoods: silviculture

EMACE implements its programmes with a dedicated team of committed full-time staff and volunteers with the support of experts from resource groups of various disciplines and foreign experts when local expertise is not available for project implementation.  EMACE also sits on various National Steering Committees including the Colombo Environmental Improvement Program and Water Council.

EMACE is also a proud member of the Consortium for Street Children and the International Association of Environment Impact Assessment.
